Huddersfield E -vs- York D

There's a saying which states you should never take anything for granted. Given the result of our match today, never a truer word was said. York D are bottom of league 9, so while we went into the game with an open mind, we were expecting to win.

Indeed the first round saw us go up 30 points. But York D rallied and won the next 3 rounds by 19, 12 and 18 IMPs respectively. Final result: 88 to 107 IMPs which converts to 7-13 VPs.

Well done to York D, great players and a nice afternoon of bridge. Thank to Jean Wood, Rudi Leurs, Peter Skuse, James Fearnley, Ian Whitehead, Pat Whitehouse and Dorelle Green. Chin up team!

Barnsley -vs- Huddersfield E

Having failed to get to a date that was suitable for everyone, and the organisers of the league not allowing us to share the points 10/10, we finally bit the bullet and played an evening match against Barnsley with only 2 pairs per team.

It was remarkable how quickly we managed to play 24 boards in 2 rounds of 12 boards. A very enjoyable evening and a great result (16-4 to Huddersfield E if you were wondering). Thanks for Barnsley for being very gracious hosts and buying us all a drink. Thanks to the players who changed their plans at short notice. So that's Jean Wood, Rudi Leurs and Dorelle Green. Great play everyone.

Summer Bridge

From April 22nd the beginners U 3 A group are going to meet to play bridge at the club on Thursday mornings from 10.10 am to 12.15.
We should play 12 boards and would welcome all friendly players to join us any week. Just come. No partner needed.

Doncaster E -vs- Huddersfield E

We knew the match against Doncaster E was going to be a tough one. After all, they've only lost one match this season. Things started off going their way with a close 1 point win on the first round (even though we won more points, but that's another matter). But we had a fantastic second round with a 6 spades slam bid and made by Peter and James. We won it by 34 IMPs.

Doncaster E rallied in the third, making a couple of difficult games, but were a bit rash and gave away 800 pts to Clive and Ann. We won this round by just 7 points (+40 overall at this point).

We were sensing an air of desperation from Doncaster on the last round with games and slams being bid with minimum points. And the results were inevitable, even with a couple of bad boards, we won the last round helped by an excellent 3NT by Ian and Pat and a 3 spades doubled, making +1 trick by James and Peter for a fantastic 930 pts.

The final score was +66 or 3-17 VPS to Huddersfield E giving us a badly needed boost in the league table.

A great result for Huddersfield E and many, many thanks to (in no particular order) James Fearnley, Peter Skuse, Ian Whitehead, Pat Whitehouse and Dorelle Green. Extra special thanks for Clive and Ann Barnett for boldly stepping in to the team for this match at such short notice.

Huddersfield E lose to Harrogate D

What a dreaful start to our Away season! First we have to postpone Barnsley and now we've been beaten by Harrogate. To be fair, they were an excellent team and we tried our best, but they won every round. Congratulations to Harrogate. Thanks to James, Peter, Ian, Pat, Alyson, Brenda and Dorelle. The score you say? 17-3 to Harrogate.
